The basics: distance, time, and route
The drive from Nairobi to Naivasha covers approximately 90 kilometres, following the Nairobi–Nakuru highway (A104) through Limuru and over the Rift Valley escarpment. Under normal conditions, the journey takes 90 minutes to 2 hours. During busy holiday weekends or Friday afternoons, allow an extra 30–45 minutes for Nairobi exit traffic.
The road is tarmac throughout and in generally good condition. You will pass through Nairobi's leafy western suburbs, climb through the cool highlands of Limuru, and then descend dramatically into the Great Rift Valley — one of the most spectacular stretches of road in East Africa.
The descent into the Rift Valley escarpment is genuinely one of the most beautiful drives in Kenya. Sit on the left side of the vehicle for the best views as you come down from Limuru.
The best stops along the way
- Rift Valley Escarpment Viewpoint
Approximately 50 km from Nairobi, just before the descent into the valley, there are several roadside viewpoints where you can pull over and take in the full panorama of the Great Rift Valley. On a clear day the view extends for over 100 km. It is genuinely breathtaking and a natural first stop. Allow 15 minutes.

2. Limuru Tea Country
Passing through Limuru, you will notice the landscape change from urban to rolling green tea estates. The cool air and mist make this feel like a completely different country from Nairobi 30 km behind you. The Kiambethu Tea Farm offers guided tours if you want to make it a proper stop.
Optional detour · 35 km from Nairobi3
3. Mai Mahiu Junction
At the bottom of the escarpment, the small town of Mai Mahiu is a good place to stretch your legs and grab a cold drink. Several roadside kiosks sell fresh fruit — particularly pineapple and bananas — at excellent prices. A natural break point before the final 30 km to Naivasha.

What to do when you get to Naivasha
Naivasha's main attraction is the lake itself — a freshwater Rift Valley lake famous for its birdlife, hippos, and the boat rides that let you get close to both. A morning boat trip on Lake Naivasha is one of the most peaceful experiences in Kenya.
- Hell's Gate National Park — one of only two parks in Kenya where you can cycle and walk without a guide. Dramatic gorges, hot springs, and geothermal activity. Allow a full half day.
- Crescent Island — a sanctuary within the lake where you can walk among giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest on foot. Reached by a short boat ride.
- Flower farms — the Naivasha region supplies much of Europe's cut flower market. Several farms offer tours during the week.
- Mount Longonot National Park — a 2–3 hour hike up a dormant volcano with crater views. About 20 km south of Naivasha town. Worth every step.
Where to stay
Naivasha has options across the full range. The lakeshore road is lined with lodges and campsites — from luxury tented camps to affordable family guesthouses. Elsamere Conservation Centre (once the home of Joy Adamson of "Born Free" fame) is a particularly atmospheric and affordable stay right on the lake.
For a day trip, you can comfortably see Hell's Gate and the lake in one day and be back in Nairobi by early evening. For a full experience, an overnight stay is recommended.
